John was born on July 1, 1929 to John O. and Mina (Larson) Braaten. He farmed with his brother, Obert, south of Kensington, MN until February 1954 when he was drafted into the army. He was stationed in Camden, New Jersey at a 90 mm gun base and worked with radar until July of 1956. He married Beverly Bennett of Lowry, MN on July 30, 1954.
After selling the farm and moving to Alexandria, he worked for the Alexandria City Park Department and 27 years for the Minnesota Highway Department. He loved to fix things and did some woodworking. He enjoyed camping, fishing, square dancing, snowmobiling, and traveling on bus trips. He was generous and had a good sense of humor.
John died on Saturday, November 9th, 2019, at the age of 90, at Edgewood in Alexandria. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beverly; daughter, Terry (Jim) Johnson of Maple Grove; granddaughters, Christine (Neil) Henken of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Jennifer of Seattle, WA, and 28 beloved nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by Terry’s in-law family.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 14th from 6-8 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, and will continue from 10-11 AM at Bethesda Lutheran Church on Friday, November 15th, followed by the funeral service at 11 AM. Interment to follow in Nora Lutheran Cemetery in Kensington, MN.
