Laura Margaret McCoy was born on March 3rd, 1936 in Alba township in southern Minnesota to parents Frank and Edith (Benner) Thiner. She grew up in a large farming family in Brewster and Wadena, MN and graduated as the salutatorian from Brewster High School in 1954.
Laura was united in marriage to Larry McCoy on August 16th, 1958. They started their family in Canby, MN with the births of Greg, Steve, Nancy and Tom before moving to Alexandria, MN in 1967 where Jeff was born. Larry and Laura raised their family in Victoria Heights and lived happily in lake country for over 50 years.
Life growing up on a farm surrounded by many siblings and cousins was never boring—or easy. Social life revolved around music and dancing in those early years. There was always piano playing and singing in the Thiner home. Later, she would come to enjoy gardening, golfing, fishing, genealogy, and volunteering at church, the Runestone Museum, and the Historical Society.
Laura truly felt like she experienced more than she thought possible in her 83 years. She loved following and participating in the activities of her children and grandchildren including sports, music, travel and family camping trips. She was a devoted fan of the Vikings, Lynx, and Gophers, but especially the Alexandria Cardinals.
On Sunday, December 15th, 2019, Laura died peacefully in her sleep due to complications of recurrent cancer. She is survived by Larry, her husband of 61 years; five children, Greg McCoy of Charleston, SC, Steve (Lynne) McCoy of Eden Prairie, Nancy (Mike) Barthold of Brooklyn Center, Tom (Lori) McCoy of Eagan, Jeff (Erin) McCoy of Alexandria; grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Jack, Sam, Rebecca, Kaitlin, Sean, Shannon, Isaac and Brady.
