Norman Eugene Nelson was born May 14, 1932, on a family farm west of Eagle Bend, Minnesota to Algot and Monica (Kuhne) Nelson.  He attended country school#172 and then graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1950.  Norman farmed with his father until he enlisted into the U.S. Army in January of 1954 where he received advanced training in Fort Lewis, Washington. He was discharged in 1956 with Honors. Norman took over the family farm in 1958 after the sudden death of his father.

Norman was united in marriage to Joan Wolters on August 26, 1958, in St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River.  The couple lived on the family farm and later started their family and was blessed with four children, Diane, Duane, Alan, and Brian. As a family they would enjoy taking a week or two off in the summer to travel.

Every September, for eighteen years, Norman would get together with his army buddies in Flandreu, South Dakota to talk over the old times. Norman retired in 2005 from farming. He then enjoyed taking time to spend with family, six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Meeting at local casinos for family fun and camping on the weekends at the farm where the grandchildren enjoyed tractor rides, four wheeler rides, bonfires, and cookouts. After retirement, Norman also enjoyed daily breakfast with his friends at Grannys Café in Eagle Bend, the Farm House in Clarissa, or the Cozy Cup Café in Parkers Prairie.

He was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church in Parkers Prairie, MN.  Norman and several others loaded bricks onto railcars at St. John Abby that were used to build the original church.    He was also a 50 year member of the Eagle Bend American Legion Post #280.
