Alan Olsen

Alan Monroe Olsen was born on March 30, 1924, in Holmes City Township on the family farm. He was the eighth of nine children born to Thomas and Lois (Bushnell) Olsen. He attended Holmes City grade school and Kensington High School. He was confirmed by Rev. AJ Sheldahl. Alan served his country during World War II in the United States Navy in the South Pacific. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946. He was a member of the American Legion. Alan played on the original Holmes City baseball team which was organized in 1948. On October 20, 1948, Alan was united in marriage to Elna Ellingson at the Parsonage in Evansville. They were engaged in farming as their parents before them. To this union two children were born Kenneth Alan and Barbara Kay. Mr. Olsen was a member of the Oscar Lake Lutheran Church. He was a 4-H leader when Ken and Barby were in 4-H. During his life he loved playing cards, hunting, fishing, watching baseball and taking Sunday drives. After retiring from farming he continued to do field work for his friends and neighbors. Alan especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and they enjoyed their time with him. Alan died on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. He is survived by his two children: Ken & wife, Vicky Lynn of Osakis, Barby of Farwell; grandchildren: Melissa Olsen and fianc�? Brian Kreuser, John (Lindsey Dropik), and Jordan; sister-in-law, Vivian Olsen of Mpls; brother-in-law, Joe Rutherford of Kensington and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elna; parents, and eight brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held on Monday, June 27, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Oscar Lake Lutheran Church with Rev. Denise Croskey officiating. Pallbearers were James Olsen, Neal Olsen, Marcus Olsen, Charles Olsen, Dick Lund, Peter Rutherford. Honorary Pallbearers were Robert Olsen, David Olsen, Daniel Olsen and Dennis Olsen. Military Honors were by the Kensington American Legion. Burial was at the Oscar Lake Cemetery.
