Alice Mae VanVickle Hauptli Baumann died on April 12, 2025, in Alexandria, MN, at the age of 92.

Alice Baumann was born August 8, 1932, to Edward VanVickle and Mable Mills VanVickle. Alice grew up the youngest of six sisters in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Alice graduated High School and married Elten Dean Hauptli in 1950. Alice and Elten settled in Springfield, MN, where they raised their sons, James Elten and Mickie Jon. Alice worked the majority of her professional life at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Springfield, where she started as a bookkeeper, then a teller, and eventually became the first female Vice President; very different from her first job, which was dodging bowling balls as a manual pin setter at the bowling alley in Sleepy Eye. Alice and Elten were members of St. John's Lutheran Church of Springfield. They enjoyed 39 years of marriage raising their boys, the birth of their granddaughter, and weekends of camping and fishing until Elten's failing health ended his life. Besides working, Alice was Elten's caregiver for many years until his death. In 1990, Alice married Arthur Baumann - it was a happy marriage of 20 years. In 2015, Alice relocated to Alexandria, MN, to be near family. She made many good friends in Alexandria but always considered Springfield her home. In 2020, Alice moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Alexandria. In her final months, Alice dealt with dementia and congestive heart failure with help from her friends at Moments Hospice. Alice's family is forever grateful for the staff at Edgewood and Moments Hospice for making her final days comfortable.

Alice's sharp sense of humor was a constant source of joy for those around her. Her humor, often surprising many people, was a testament to her resilience and strength. It stayed with her until the end.

She enjoyed camping, coffee with friends, many crafts, and her family.

Alice's love for her family was unwavering. She is survived by granddaughter Heather Hauptli of Alexandria, MN, daughter-in-law Jean (Jim) Hauptli Steiger of Alexandria, MN, sister Vera Thoms of Earlville, Illinois, brother-in-law John Johnston of Olivia, MN, and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Mable, husbands Elten Hauptli and Art Baumann; sons Jim Hauptli and Mick Hauptli; sisters Agnes Thoms, Gladys Jensen, Elma Braun, Millie Kreitinger and infant brother Clifford; sister-in-law Mavis Erickson, brother-in-law Glen Erickson and sister-in-law Violet (John) Johnston.

A private graveside inurnment will occur at Springfield Cemetery at a date to be determined.
