Ann Malmgren was born on a farm near Millerville, the second of six children born to Mary (Korkowski) and Balthasar Wagner. She attended Grade School in a rural school in Douglas County.
Ann married Leonard Malmgren on October 24, 1938. They farmed in rural Parkers Prairie until 1945 when they purchased a farm in Carlos Township, which they actively farmed for over 40 years.
Ann’s occupation was listed as “homemaker,” however she wore many hats. In addition to helping with the farm chores and the cooking/baking for the family of 6, she did all of the sewing for her three daughters, had a huge garden, and volunteered for many organizations, such as serving as a 4-H leader.
Later, after her children had moved into adulthood, Ann expanded her leadership by serving on various boards and organizations. She served as secretary of Selective Television, served on the board of the Alexandria Lakes Area Sanitary District, served as Clerk of the Carlos Township Board for many terms, and served as Douglas County Commissioner for eight years.
After Leonard and Ann retired from farming, Leonard joined Ann as her (silent?) partner in her work with organizations. After Leonard passed away in 1993, Ann continued to live on the farm until 2008 during which time she kept busy sewing, baking and gardening, always sharing with others. She then moved to Bethany Apartments in Alexandria, followed by the Knute Nelson Home four years ago.
Ann is survived by her sister, Sophia Ward children, Rosemary (Dale) Schneiderhan, Karen (Steve) Longfellow, Lynda Malmgren and Erland (Norma) Malmgren; grandchildren, Lori Schneiderhan, Todd (Christina) Schneiderhan, Jana (Dan) Johnson, Stephanie Wicks, Donny Willis and Derek Willis; great grandchildren, Tyler Purcell, Blake, Ariana, Alexis, Jack and Henry Schneiderhan; Cooper Wicks, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father and four brothers.
