Arlene Dorothy (Buhman) Nack was born in Carlos, MN to John and Minnie (Kuehl) Buhman on July 11, 1923. She had 3 older sisters and was the baby of the family. At that time, because of the distance from Carlos to Alexandria, Arlene and her sister, Margaret, rented a room on Douglas Street for the last two years of high school which was a lonesome time for her. She graduated from Central High School in 1941 and was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Carlos.
Arlene met Gerhard Nack through church and they were married in July of 1944. They were blessed with 6 children; Donald, Sherryl, Dennis, Darlene, Darryl and Debra, and one still born infant, Evelyn. She had her work cut out for her keeping track of 6 children which makes what a great mom she was even more impressive. Arlene and Gerhard took their kids to visit their grandmas every Sunday, took family camping trips, and provided their kids with a good childhood. Throughout her life, Arlene worked at Bethany Home, Reuter’s Grocery Store, Thrifty White, and worked candling eggs.
Arlene and Gerhard owned the same home for over 70 years and lived in Alexandria all their years together except one, in Hastings, MN. They enjoyed camping often, especially at Carlos State Park, watching TV, and fishing together. Gerhard was always stopping to visit with everyone for longer than most people would have patience for, but Arlene did and held it with grace. Gerhard passed away in 1985.
Everybody loved Arlene and she loved everybody. Arlene’s greatest joy was with her family and friends and she thrived on people. She loved to bake, and always had something special made for visitors and of course, the coffee was always on. Arlene often took her grandkids to Lake Winona to feed the geese and loved all children in general. She volunteered at Bethany Home and was extremely proud to be known as the “Popcorn Lady”.
