Art Nelson

Art Nelson (Levi Arthur Nelson) passed from this life into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at Knute Nelson Care Center at the age of 100 years old.

He was born September 14, 1915, to Alfred and Emma Nelson in Shevlin, Minnesota, baptized and confirmed at Clearwater Lutheran Church in Shevlin.

Art lost his father when he was 2 years old leaving his mother with two young sons.
In 1930 his brother, Arnold, also passed away and shortly thereafter Art and his mother moved to Alida in Sell Lake Township.

Art attended school in Shelvin and later attended French's Business School in Bemidji.

From 1943 – 1945 Mr. Nelson was employed by the Hudson Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan in the construction of war planes. He married Hilma Caroline Peterson of Sell Lake Township on July 28, 1943, in Detroit. After a short stay in Southern California they returned to Northern Minnesota and eventually made their their home in Bagley located in Clearwater County for the next 47 years. Mr. Nelson sold health insurance until his retirement in 1979. He especially cared about his faith and family and throughout his life travel was important. For the last nine years they lived in Alexandria, MN.

His wife prceeded him in death in 2006. Mr. Nelson is survived by five children, David Arnold Nelson and his wife, MariKay, of Golden Valley, MN, Avis Ann Kruger of Golden Valley, Iris Adele Nelson of Quincy, IL, Allen Luther Nelson and his wife, Corliss, of Alexandria, and Gregory Mark Nelson and his wife, Sandy, of Hermantown, MN. Eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild survive.

The funeral will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Garfield, Minnesota on Monday, January 18 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Shevlin at the Clearwater Lutheran Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
