Known as “Bernie” to nearly everyone, Bernard (Bernie) Hogan died on Friday, November 11, 2022, after a long and fruitful life. He was 89 years old having been born December 2nd, 1932, in Monterey, MN, the son of Joseph (Leo) and Olive Hogan. He was the youngest of four children.
Bernie was graduated from Trimont, MN High School in 1950, where he was a stand-out player on both the football and basketball teams. After high school, Bernie continued to work on the family farm. In 1953, he married Gladys Marie Lundskow of Jackson, MN. The two remained married for nearly 63 years until her death in 2016.
Bernie and his family stayed in the Trimont area until 1957 when he and Gladys bought a farm near Brooten, MN. In 1964, they purchased and moved to a farm a few miles north, where they lived for 36 years. Then, in 2000, Bernie and Gladys retired to the Alexandria area near lake Le Homme Dieu. In addition to farming, Bernie worked for several years with a local builder as a carpenter. He was also a school bus driver for more than twenty-five years for the Brooten and Belgrade school districts.
It’s been said that the true measure of one’s life is what they do with their dash, the hyphen between their date of birth and date of death. Bernie’s dash was well spent. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He passed along his honesty, common sense, and work ethic to three generations.
Bernie was always quick with a joke or story, and he perpetually had a song in his heart. He loved songs but not music. If it didn’t have words he could sing along to, he wasn’t interested. He was nearly always singing something. He’s told his last joke and sung his last song. He will be missed.
Bernie was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, daughters Patricia (Pat) and Nancy, sisters Marguerite Hogan and Betty Hatch and brothers Orville and John.
He is survived by daughters Kathy Roering of Belgrade and Jody (John) Schimek of Alexandria, sons Mike (Norma) Hogan of Oxnard CA, Keith (Maxine) Hogan of Ham Lake, and Scott (Linda) Hogan of Hartford SD, sister Bonita Busse of Aurora, CO and 23 grandchildren and 27 greatgrandchildren.
