Memorial services for Bernice Kluver will be held Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Don Wilke officiating. A visitation will take place one hour prior to services at the church from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Burial will take place after the service at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria.
Bernice Norma Kluver was born on October 23, 1930, to Christ and Wilma (Thompson) Herness in Zahl, ND. She was confirmed at Rudser Lutheran Church in Zahl on May 28, 1944. Unfortunately, Bernice lost both of her parents at a young age, with her mother passing away when she was 5 and her father when she was 10 years old. As a result, she was raised by her older brothers, Lyman, Lester, and Warren, until they started their own families. Bernice was then adopted by her aunt, Minnie Ellwanger, while she was still a young girl.
From an early age, Bernice had a strong work ethic. At the age of 12, she already started driving grain trucks and contributed to various farm tasks. She once mentioned to her family that she didn't particularly enjoy the taste of eggs because she had to pick them every morning, wash them, and sell them in town.
On October 30, 1950, Bernice married Ardell Kluver, whom she met at a dance. Ardell was a drummer in local bands, and Bernice often accompanied him to performances as they both shared a love for music and dancing. She loved to play jam sessions too, with her joining in on the piano or the accordion. Traveling was another passion they shared, and they spent many winters in Arizona and Texas.
For 18 years, Bernice worked as a school bus driver in Alexandria, a job she wholeheartedly loved. She often spoke about her experiences and expressed her deep affection for the students she transported. She will forever be remembered for her tidy home, thrifty nature, and her giving heart -- always putting the needs of others before her own.
Sadly, Bernice passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at the Galeon Senior Living in Osakis. She is survived by her four children: Wanda Steinberg (Doug Lien) of Grand Rapids, Brad (Sue) Kluver of Litchfield, Brian (Margie) Kluver of St. Cloud, and Chris (Scott) Dirkes of Ramsey. Bernice was extremely proud of her eleven grandchildren: Aaron, Matt, Kallie, Kelsey, Kayla, Kyle, Kameron, Jaimie, Jenny, Taylor and Riley; and her precious eleven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Christ and Wilma Herness; husband, Ardell Kluver; brothers; as well as many other beloved family and friends.
