Betty Jean Mero was born at home on August 1, 1932 on Frog Lake near Chokio, MN to Myrna (Scott) and Fremont Mero. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morris, MN. Betty attended a one room country school where she developed a lifelong love for music and education. Betty graduated from Hancock High School in 1950.
Betty was united marriage to George Femrite in 1953. They made their home near Lowry, MN and were blessed with five children over the next eight years. In 1968 she enrolled at the University of Minnesota Morris where Betty earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. She did graduate work at Mankato State University
Betty moved her family to Morris, MN where she began working with adults with disabilities. She had a long career serving people with disabilities. Betty was married to Alan Shaw in 1975. During their forty-three years of marriage they made their home in Morris, MN, Montevideo, MN, Bismarck, ND, Kimball, MN and for three years in Florida. They returned to Minnesota in 1989 and made their home in Faribault. In 1994 Betty retired. Recently Betty and Alan moved to Alexandria, MN.
Betty and Alan shared their Christian faith, history, love of music and theater. They had many travels together which included twenty-five cruises Betty recorded her travels among the 165 scrapbooks she created. Betty loved scrapbooking and collecting photographs.
Betty’s faith was very important to her; it was her guiding light. She was a lifelong member in the Lutheran faith and served her churches wherever she lived. She volunteered her time for church activities and served as a church organist for many years.
Betty and Alan also shared a love for serving people. Betty had a kind and generous spirit; she could make anyone she visited with feel very special. In 2015 Betty was recognized by the City of Faribault for her sixteen years volunteering as a one-on-one tutor at the Trinity Lutheran School. She volunteered her time to serve special meals to the elderly and was very involved in collecting needed items for infants and distributing them through the Pregnancy Options organization. Betty cherished her family and faith and insisted on living life to the fullest with care and concern for all.
On Wednesday, July 4, 2018 Betty died at the age of eighty-five years. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bufford and Monte Mero; one sister, Bonnie Anderson; and one brother-in-law, LeRoy Meyer. Betty is survived by husband, Alan Shaw of Alexandria; children, Bobbie Adam of Fergus Falls, MN, Julie Ridout and husband, Buck, of Fergus Falls, Cindy Favre and husband, Mike, of St. Peter, MN, Laurie Lundberg of Richfield, MN and Tim Femrite of Fergus Falls; grandchildren, Melanie Adam, Tiffany Sebek, William Ridout, Zach Ridout, Sara Bowman, Jonathan Favre and Rebecca Favre; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Sally Meyer of Battle Lake, MN and Sonia Meyer of Morris; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 12 Noon Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Reverend Dennis Preston will officiate. Interment will be in the Summit Cemetery at Morris. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home.
