Burdell Oliver Benson was born September 3, 1929 in Ben Wade Township, MN, the son of Robert and Olga (Moseng) Benson. He grew up on the family farm near Starbuck and attended country school. Following his schooling he worked on the farm with his parents.
Burdell was employed with Alexandria Light and Power as a lineman. On August 20, 1960 Burdell was united in marriage to Virginia Enstrom. The couple was blessed with two children, Barb and Larry. He worked as a lineman for thirty years and retired as a line foreman. Burdell continued to run the farm where they had lived since 1963. Over the years they had raised numerous animals and feed crops.
They eventually moved off of the farm and into a home originally built by Virginia's father just north of Alex where they resided for numerous years. They moved to Grand Arbor in Alexandria in summer of 2016 where he resided until his passing.
Burdell was an avid fisherman and loved fishing year-round and was always generous with his catch. He liked to go deer hunting with Larry. He enjoyed sports and loved baseball. In young adulthood he was a pitcher for the Lowry Leghorns. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. He also enjoyed camping and traveling around the United States.
Burdell was a very giving person and when he gave, he did so in the humblest way possible. He was a patient man with great integrity and a sense of fairness. He also liked to visit with others and share his sense of humor. Burdell had a strong faith in God and used his faith to guide his actions in life. He was a member of Grace Church. He was active and served in many roles including deacon, trustee, youth leader, choir member, usher, Sunday school teacher, and greeter over the years. He emulated God's love in how he loved his wife, children, grandchildren and anyone he met.
