Carmen Sjoberg-Parmeter passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 29, 2016 under the loving care of the Ecumen Bethany staff and Douglas County Hospice. She was 95 years old. Carmen was born on October 9, 1920 in Greene, ND to Louise (Stensrud) and Oscar Sjoberg, the second oldest of six children. She attended school in Moorhead, MN and graduated in 1938. Carmen was married in February 1946 and lived most of her adult life in the Fargo-Moorhead area. She and her husband had one daughter, Judy.
Carmen was a valued legal secretary for two law offices in Fargo before retiring at age 64 to move to Alexandria, MN to be near her daughter (Judy), son-in-law (Kevin), and granddaughters (Macaille and Caitlin). She adored her family and that feeling was mutual.
Carmen was an active member of First Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary while living in Alexandria. She loved to read books, was a crossword puzzle master, an excellent letter writer, and Abraham Lincoln's biggest fan. Her father was a Norwegian immigrant and she was very proud of her Norwegian/Swedish heritage.
Carmen was born a three pound preemie, and grew to be a smart, strong, independent woman and a wonderful single mother at a time when raising a child alone was not common, nor easy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother (Curtis), sister-in-law (Nita), sister (Alice), brother-in-law (Al Gronner), and brother-in-law (Budd Humphrey). She is survived by her daughter Judy (Kevin Mahoney), granddaughters Macaille (Michael Hafner) and Caitlin, brothers Oscar and Earl (Janet), sister Ona Humphrey, step-grandchildren (Kylee, Sydnee, and Brandon Hafner), and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church, Alexandria, at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4th. Visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will be at Watson Lutheran Church Cemetery, Watson, MN.
