Caryl White

October 30, 1927 — July 10, 2018

Alexandria, MN

Caryl White, 90

Caryl was born on October 30, 1927, in Vandergrift Pennsylvania, the daughter of Paul and Rose (George) Garman.  She attended Vandergrift High School, graduating in 1945.  She was awarded a Senatorial Scholarship and chose to attend the University of Pittsburgh where she met her sweetheart, Jim White, who was there on the GI Bill following service in World War II, graduating in 1949.

Caryl and Jim were married on July 15, 1950, and made their home in Pittsburgh.  Jim enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry that took Caryl and their young family to Florida and back to Pittsburgh before a promotion brought them to Bloomington, Minnesota, in 1965, where they remained for several years.  During this time, Caryl enjoyed a teaching career at St. Helena’s (South Park) Catholic School, in Minneapolis, prior to their final career move to the Philadelphia area in 1979.

The Whites retired to Alexandria in 1984, and enjoyed family gatherings, entertaining, traveling in their motor home, and just being in each other’s company.  Jim and Caryl were inseparable.  She lovingly nursed him through his final days and was at his side when he passed in September, 2002.  Caryl displayed remarkable resilience in what she termed her “alone years”, remaining actively involved with church and neighborhood friends and was a long-serving treasurer for the Bridgeport Townhomes Association.  She was happy to be out and about as often as possible.  She recently moved to Nelson Gables prior to a terminal diagnosis taking her to Bethany on the Lake for the final weeks of her life.  She was grateful for the care and concern she received from family, friends, and medical personnel.  Throughout her life, Caryl remained devoted to her Lord, her husband, and her family.  Caryl’s positive attitude, encouragement of others, and personal charm will be sorely missed.

Mrs. White died on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Bethany on the Lake.  She is survived by her two sons, Gregg and Sandy White of Hudson, WI, Glenn and Heidi White of Alexandria, daughter Christine White of Newtown Square, PA, and six grandchildren:  Ryan (Darcy), Nichole (Rick), Jacob (Heather), Lesa, Kristopher (Jessica), and Saleigh (David), and nine great-grandchildren.  Her parents and brother preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018, 11 a.m., at the Alexandria United Methodist Church with a viewing to begin at 10 a.m., and a luncheon to follow.  Pastor Craig Haberman will be officiating.

Pallbearers are grandchildren Jacob White, Kristopher White, Nichole Frazer, and neighbors Chuck Holm, Leon Breun, and Bill Van Dyke.

Interment will be at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria.  Donations in Caryl’s memory can be made to Alexandria United Methodist Church, Bethany on the Lake, or Hospice of Douglas County.
