Cora Smith

Mary Smith was born February 3, 1916, on a farm in Germania Township, Todd County, MN, to Charlie H. and Catherine E. (Shaffer) Hayes. Cora was the youngest of eight children. At three years of age the family moved to a forty acre farm one mile north of Clarissa. Cora attended school in Clarissa through the 8th grade. After graduation Cora did housework at Long Prairie and Clarissa, MN. On November 29, 1934, she married Veril E. Smith in Little Falls, MN. Prior to moving to a farm near Eagle Bend, MN, in 1938, they lived for a short time at Little Falls and Brainerd, MN, where Veril was employed as a baker. They moved to Alexandria, MN, in 1968. Cora was always busy. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, playing cards, flowers, fishing, square dancing, playing the piano/organ, weaving rugs, crafts and spent several winters in Texas with a friend. Cora and Veril were members of the United Methodist Church. From 1972 to 1982 Veril was custodian at the church with Cora assisting. Her first job in Alexandria was working one summer at the Anderson Greenhouse. She also was a cook at the Holiday Inn for six years and at Pilgrim Point Bible Camp four summers. Veril died March 14, 1989. In April 2006 Cora moved to Windmill Ponds (Assisted Living) in Alexandria where she enjoyed living for six years. On April 25, 2012 Cora moved to Eventide Lutheran Homes, Moorhead, MN. Cora died May 22, 2012. Cora is survived by her son Edgar V. (Louella), Moorhead, MN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters; Homer, Chester, Justin, Mabel Beattie, Marie Prairie, Helen Schroeder and Nettie Gjerstad. Memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Hansen officiating. Burial will be at the Hope Cemetery in Eagle Bend, Minnesota.
