Cortland Wayne Scherrer was born June 7, 1930 in Alexandria, MN, the son of Carl and Lillian (Thorson) Scherrer. Corky was raised and schooled in Brandon, MN where he was a lifelong resident. He was also a lifelong member of Chippewa Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. On June 20 1948 Corky was united in marriage to Julianna Toft in Brandon. The couple made their home in Brandon and were blessed with six children. Corky went to work for Ludke?s as a grocery salesman. He remained with Ludke?s until his retirement. Following Julianna?s death in 1991, Corky was united in marriage to Norma (Wibstad) Strom on September 17, 1994 and continued to live in Brandon. Corky loved baseball; he played baseball in high school and later played town baseball for Brandon. When he could no longer play he kept his interest going as an umpire and became the Resorter?s League commissioner. He was also an avid Twins fan. Corky enjoyed all sports and enjoyed watching whatever game was being broadcast. Corky took an interest in car racing and attended many local races. He was a great card player and played all kinds of games. He love teaching his children and grandchildren to play Cribbage. Corky liked to spend time bird watching. Corky also liked to spend time in the outdoors. He fished summer and winter. Corky hunted all kinds of game; deer, pheasants, duck, geese or whatever was in season. Corky?s family was important to him. He always was supportive of his children and loved spending time with his grandchildren. On Thursday, June 13, 2013, Corky died at the age of eighty-three years. One daughter, Lynnette Scott, and two step-great grandchildren preceded him in death. Corky is survived by his wife, Norma Scherrer of Brandon; two sons, Stan Scherrer and wife, Renata, of Alexandria and Scott Scherrer of Brandon; three daughters, Becky Nelson and husband, Lyle, of Alexandria, Cynthia Swanstrom and husband, Larry, of Rosemount, MN and Deborah Roers of Alexandria; four step-children, Terry Ness and husband, Bill, of Brandon Tammie Holte and husband, Jeff, of Garfield, MN, Todd Strom and wife, Terri, of Brandon, and Nora Goodburn and husband, Jerry, of North Mankato, MN; sixteen grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and twelve step-great grandchildren. A Funeral service was held Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon. Reverend Michael Johnson officiated. Marcia Bolin, Diann Guenther and Corky?s great grandchildren provided music. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Casket bearers included Collin Nelson, Shane Roers, Shawn Swanstrom, Rory Swanstrom, Brian Harper and Leslie Ness. Honorary casket bearers included all Past and Present Members of the Brandon Fire Department. Arrangements were with Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
