Craig Severn Damstrom was born in Plentywood, Montana on September 16, 1943 to Wilbur and Eloyce (Anderson) Damstrom. Craig graduated from Montana State, Bozeman and received a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture. For five years he volunteered for the peace corps in Guatemala, San Francisco, and Ecuador. In 1969, he married Kathy Dahl from Elbow Lake, Minnesota and the couple welcomed three children.
Craig was a corporate executive, doing international business in the agriculture industry where he served in Latin America for Rohman Haas, Sandoz, and Velsicol for 20 years before going on to Chicago until 1989. He then purchased a farm (the Haubs farm) near Forada, Minnesota where he farmed cash crops for 25 years, which he named Southwind Acres. After full-time farming, he became a consultant for the state of Minnesota. His mission was to help the local growers find international markets for their products directly. This took him to new places like Brazil, China, Japan, and even Cuba. Those were memorable trips as he got to negotiate with Fidel Castro on agricultural pilot programs. Other entrepreneurial projects he took on were introducing website technology in Mexico, and starting a container business in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Craig loved horses, dogs, tennis, golf, and travel. He was a member of the Covenant Church in Alexandria, Minnesota; and enjoyed Bible studies and ranch gatherings at Southwind Acres. He volunteered his time as president of the chamber of commerce in Costa Rica and Mexico City. He was also president of the Rotary club in Glenwood, Minnesota.
Craig went to heaven on Tuesday, March 4, 2025; he was 81 years old. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Damstrom; children: Scott (Amy) Damstrom, Kristi (Travis) Bruyer, and Justin Damstrom; grandchildren: Anderson and Pressly Damstrom, Tucker and Zoey Bruyer; sister, Cheryl (Ed) Clark; nieces and nephews: Maureen Clark, Jenny Blackburn, Wayde Foster, Terri Foster-Hayes, Corrine Foster. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Eloyce Damstrom; brother, Wayne Damstrom; sister, Gail Foster; and nephew, Shawn Foster.
