Dale Haug

Dale Edwin Haug passed away November 8 at his home. Dale Edwin Haug was born May 11, 1946, at his grandmother?s house in Bryant, SD on Mother?s Day. He grew up on the family farm with his younger brothers near Willow Lake, SD. He attended Willow Lake High School where he was active in sports and served as class president. After graduation, he attended South Dakota State University graduating with a degree in Industrial Arts. On June 2, 1967 Dale was united in marriage to Katharine Whitaker in Brookings, SD. He received a commission in the US Army and attended officer training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. Oldest son Chris was born there. He was assigned to Fort Bliss, TX before serving in Vietnam. He was a member of the South Dakota National Guard upon returning from active duty. Dale taught one semester at South Dakota State University before moving to Browns Valley, MN where he taught Industrial Arts. In 1975 he moved to Alexandria and was employed at Douglas Machine for 26 years working in different departments. He retired as Vice President of Engineering in 2002. One of his duties was International Sales, where he traveled to Europe and Australia. Sons Eric and Andrew were born in Alexandria. After retirement he worked as a consultant helping manufactures obtain patents. Dale had many hobbies. He joked that his favorite hobby was starting new ones. He was a hobby machinist, woodworker and gunsmith. He spent many hours in his shop. His favorite activity was making wooden boxes and building trailers. He built 13 grandfather clocks and learned how to repair clocks and watches. Dale and his family built his shop onto the garage, the sun porch and deck onto their house and a garage. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and rode whenever the temperature was above 50 degrees. Dale also enjoyed helping his neighbors and visiting with them. Dale was a member of the Alexandria Gun Club for 35 years and participated in Cowboy Action for 15 years. Dale was a member of the Local Harley Owners group enjoying the Wednesday night rides. Dale also sang in church choirs starting when he was in high school. Dale adored his two granddaughters and was very excited when they were born. Dale is survived by his wife of 44 years, Katharine, sons Chris (Lucy) of Madison, WI, Eric (Maria) of Alexandria, and Andrew of Fargo. Granddaughters Makiah and Anika. Step- Granddaughters Carissa and Amanda Beverson, Brothers, Arden of Fort Worth, TX, Reed (Beth) of Hermosa, SD, and Kendal (Kim) of Rapid City, SD. Aunts Marlene (Verdon) Lamb of Vienna, SD, and Marlyce (John) Peterson of Willow Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, several aunts, uncles and a nephew. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011, 2:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Pallbearers were Maynard Gulbranson, Steve Nelson, James King, Bob Mittelstadt, Marsh Nichols, Gary Kluver. Burial will be at Kinkead Cemetery.
