Dean Stanger

OBITUARY Dean Bernard Stanger was born on September 27, 1925 in St. Cloud, MN, the son of Edwin and Elna (Spickerman) Stanger. He graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School and at the age of seventeen he joined the United States Navy during WWII. He sailed on the USS West Virginia in the South Pacific. Dean continued his education after the war and attended U of M, St. John?s University, and then graduated from St. Cloud University receiving his degree in education. He started his teaching career in Northhome, MN and then he moved to Alexandria and taught at Central High School, Jefferson High School, and the Alexandria Technical College. After 30 years of teaching he retired in 1984. Dean was very active and a lifetime member of the Alexandria American Legion Post #87. He was past Post Commander, Adjutant, and marched in many parades throughout his life. Dean was also a member of the Elks Lodge where he was a past Exalted Ruler and he was a member of First Congregational Church where he served as a deacon for many years. Dean was a perfectionist. He carefully tended to his garden and took playing golf at Alexandria Golf Club very seriously. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Dean B. Stanger died on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Knute Nelson at the age of 86 years old. He is survived by his daughters Terri (John) Moen of Lowry, MN; Deanna (Steve) Felder of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren Tami (Brad) Greenwalt of Raymond, MN; Heather (John) Vinje of Maple Grove, MN; Neil Pederson of Minneapolis, MN; Michael Moen of Lowry, MN; Amanda Pederson of Minneapolis, MN; 9 great grandchildren; brother Craig (Martha) Stanger of Annadale, VA; sister Shirley (Adolph) Zeman of Silver Spring, MD. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Dixie Stanger. A funeral service was held on March 22, 2012 at First Congregation Church in Alexandria with the Reverend Scott Keehn officiating. Interment was in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Casket Bearers were Michael Moen, Tami Greenwald, Ryan Greenwald, Neil Pederson, Amanda Pederson, and Heather Vinje.
