Derek Kyle Nelson was born on February 19, 1985 in Alexandria, MN to Kevin and Lois (Nessman) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Kensington. Derek graduated from West Central High School in 2003. Derek attended Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes and earned a degree in Neon Technology. He worked at J&H signing company in Perham for one year. Derek then attended Alexandria Technical College where he received a professional sales degree. In May of 2007 he went to work for Schwieters Chevrolet of Glenwood where he was a salesperson. Derek enjoyed snowboarding, skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, cars, and being a ladies man. He was gifted with the ability to talk to anybody and make friends of all ages. Derek died suddenly on Sunday, March 1, 2009 while snowmobiling at the age of 24. He is survived by his parents, Kevin and Lois Nelson of Barrett; brother, Chris (Stacy) Nelson of Hoffman; nieces, Layla and Mia also of Hoffman; grandparents, Elna Nessman of Kensington, and Pat and Wayne Nelson of Barrett; great-grandparent, Ermal Nelson of Hoffman; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and hundreds of friends he made in his journeys. A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Kensington with Reverend Barbara Chapman officiating. Music was provided by soloist, Lynn Bruss and organist, Tricia Saulsbury. Honorary Urnbearers were Matt Hanson, Karl Arnquist, Noah Anderson, Ben Fehr and Sean Fraser. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
