Diane was born in San Francisco on September 7, 1940, the daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Lindeborg) Unger. She grew up in San Francisco and graduated Balboa High School.
Shortly after graduation, she met her future husband Gary at a USO gathering. Gary left Alexandria following graduation to join the marines. Diane and Gary were married on March 19, 1960 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. They were together for over 60 years.
Diane ended up raising her family in California, Wisconsin, Indiana, and eventually the family moved to Florida in 1975. In Florida, Diane worked for Ryder Systems as an executive secretary in the Tampa area. Gary and Diane retired in 1993 and eventually moved to Alexandria in 2004 to continue retirement where Gary grew up.
Diane was a ray of light and had a tenacious ability to not let anyone darken her day. She was kind, generous, and most of all, funny. She was a lover of all people and those who had the privilege of knowing her surely had their life fulfilled with her presence and personality. She will be missed by all and there will most certainly be no other like her.
Diane died on Monday, March 3, 2025, at Melech Hospice House in Temple Terrace, Florida. She is survived by her two sons: Craig (Maureen) Ignowski and Randy (Wendy) Ignowski; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Ignowski, grandson, John Evett; three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary; son, Steven.
