Donald Dynda

October 2, 1931 — September 27, 2014

Donald Arthur Dynda was born October 2, 1931 at the home of his parents, Joseph and Lillian Dynda in rural Alexandria. He attended a one-room elementary school in Lake Mary Township and graduated from the Alexandria High School in 1950.

0n December 13, 1952 he was united in marriage to Helen Glaas.

After graduating from the MacPhail School of Music, he taught music (band and choral) in Alexandria, SD for 1 year.

In 1953 Don was drafted into the military and served with the 324th Army Band out of Aberdeen, Maryland.

After teaching for 2 years in Lake Preston, he and his family moved to Hoffman in 1961. He taught at Hoffman High School until 1979. He then worked at the local cheese plant for a number of years and then at Arnquist’s Home Center until his retirement.

Special interests for Don included music (of course). He was a member of many old time polka bands including his father’s band (at age 12 years), the Six Fat Dutchman, and the Oren Budke Tempo Kings. He also played with several great name bands like Guy DeLeo, Clem Brau, and Elmer Scheid. He was also a member of the Alexandria Stage Band.

His other hobbies included being an avid fisherman, and in his later years he enjoyed crosswords and jigsaw puzzles on the internet.

He was one of the founding members of the Hoffman Lion’s Club, and in 2013 was honored to be the Grand Marshall of the Hoffman Harvest Festival Parade.

He is survived by wife Helen of Hoffman, daughter Russie (Neil) Garrett of Edmond, Oklahoma, son Steven (Judy) Dynda of Woodbury, daughter Nancy (Mark) Steere of Corcoran, daughter Vicki (Tom) Estes of Inver Grove Heights, and David Dynda of Plymouth, along with sisters Dorothy (Glenn) Hoplin of Glenwood, and Lonnie (Dennis) Danielson of Farwell. Don also leaves behind 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and Kate and Allie (Vicki’s cats), who provided great comfort and amusement in Don’s final days.
