Donald JoSal Kortie Sr. was born on November 12, 1929 in Verma, North Dakota to Fred and Julia (JoSal) Kortie. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Donald joined the Army and served during the Korean War. Donald married Margaret Bisson on January 27, 1953. The couple moved to Minneapolis where he worked at the Post Office. They later moved to Alexandria where he became a partner with Vern Bisson at the mobile home and car dealership. Donald then worked for the City of Alexandria working as a laborer, driving heavy equipment and retired in 1991. Donald enjoyed working and staying busy, building homes, working as an electrician, and tinkering. He also enjoyed traveling and going to the casino. Donald died on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Douglas County Hospital at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Alexandria; son, Donald (Yvonne) Kortie Jr. of Alexandria; daughter, Judy Henderson of Alexandria; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and sister, Virginia Anderson of Fargo. Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Julia; son, Bruce; brother, Jack; and sister, Margaret Westrick. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Steve Binsfeld officiating. Military Honors were provided by Alexandria American Legion Post 87 and VFW Post 936. Interment was in the St. Mary?s Catholic Cemetery. Honorary urn bearers were Monty Hevern, Frank Chan, Al Bakke, Bruce Kortie, Bob Ritz, and Richard Ritz. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
