OBITUARY
Donald Duane Schaffer was born on May 28, 1946, in Jackson, Minnesota to George and Maxine (Zahorsky) Schaffer. After he graduated from Jackson High School, Don enlisted in the Army National Guard and served for four years.

On May 7, 1966, Don married Rhonda Bernhardt. They made their home in Jackson with many family members living nearby. The couple was blessed with two sons, Shannon and Tyler. Don worked for Dekalb Seeds, Jacques Seeds and later retired from AgCo in 2002.

Don and Rhonda purchased a wooded lot on Lake Oscar in 1990, again with family next door. After many long days of clearing the lot, manicuring the lawn, planning and designing their dream home, it was finished in 2009. Don was a member of the Jackson American Legion for over 23 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to auctions and rummage sales, wine making, and stopping by the convenience store to buy lottery tickets and the paper. Don also loved taking his dog AJ "for a run". He was known to make his grandchildren “Pupcakes for bref-kist”. He loved teasing the kids with his "gooder" sense of humor. He was always good for a freezy or gumball for the kids, a burger for the dog or a "missing finger" or "brain sucker" joke. Don died on Friday, April 29, 2016 at Wellstead Assisted Living in Rogers at the age of 69. He is survived by his sons, Shannon (Sherry) Schaffer of Alexandria and Tyler (Janell Linville) Schaffer of Winona; grandchildren, Allison (fiancé, Ryan Rasche) Nau of Jackson, MN, Ashley Schaffer and Ryan Schaffer both of Alexandria; sister, Diana Schaffer of Jackson; and brother-in-law, George Maras of Farmington; and many nieces and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his parents, George and Maxine; wife, Rhonda who he called his “Blonde Bombshell”; sister, Carolyn Maras; brother, David Schaffer and an infant brother; and loving dog, AJ.

A memorial service was held on Friday, May 6, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Holmes City with Reverend Carol Olson. Military Honors were provided by Alexandria American Legion Post 87, VFW Post 936, VVA Chapter 235, and the Minnesota National Honor Guard. Interment was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Holmes City.
