Doris Madeline Hertwig passed away peacefully, at 87 years old, with one of her grandchildren, Haylie Terhark, by her side on April 7th at 9:15 p.m. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 23rd, 1937, to Irene Duesner and John T. Duenser. She was raised by her grandmother and attended Catholic school in Chicago, Illinois, until the eighth grade. Around that time, Doris met Leonard H. Hertwig on a blind date set up by her friend’s boyfriend when she was 14 years old. Originally, another man was supposed to attend, but he canceled, so Leonard stepped in. Clearly, it was meant to be because about two years later they got married on August 1st, 1953, and she became a military wife for twenty years. Doris and her husband went on to have four children. Sadly, losing one son, John, at the age of eleven.

Doris was strong, independent, and had a fiery personality. She was incredibly giving, kind, selfless, and was always there for her family. Her door was always open to those she loved being around and she had a special gift for bringing everyone together, creating a sense of unity and warmth wherever she went. Doris loved sending greeting cards no matter what the occasion was, she made all of her family and friends feel cherished and remembered. She loved gardening, animals, and feeding her birds, she gave to several charities, and enjoyed dressing up and decorating her house for the holidays, especially Christmas.

Doris was a great cook and would often host gatherings with friends and family for Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas. She loved casinos, bingo, and scratch-off tickets and never missed a Minnesota Vikings game. She provided unwavering love throughout her life, her presence left a lasting impression, and her legacy will live on in each of our hearts.

Doris lives on in spirit and memory through her siblings, Yvonne Norton and Daniel (Sally) Dixon; children: Richard Hertwig, Eldora (Paul) Dero, and Jeffery (Michelle) Hertwig; grandchildren, Carrie (Brad) Patrick, Kayla (Luke) Griffith, Haylie (Greg) Terhark, Miranda Hertwig, Tina (Josh) Bernardy, Cort Dero, John (Amber) Dero, Jeremy (Julie) Hertwig, Flannary Donovan-Peterson, and JeriAnn Hertwig; great-grandchildren: Rylee, Jacob, Eliana, Eric, Zackary, Orion, Sorsha, Gage, Austin, Collin, Lydia, Lucas, Brenna, Carter, and Mavis; great-great-grandchildren, Lyla, Liam, Keatyn, Violet, and Garnet; as well as many other beloved relatives and friends.
