Doris King

September 4, 1919 — October 25, 2018

Alexandria, Minnesota

Doris Marie (Gerdrum) King was born on September 4, 1919, on a remote homestead near Grass Range, Montana to Magnus and Ida (Anderson) Gerdrum.  She attended county school for five years and graduated in 1937 from Grass Range High School.

She attended Montana Normal School for two years and then taught at Cat Creek, Winnett, and Bozeman, MT.  She enrolled at Montana State University in Missoula and graduated in 1947.  During her years there she worked at Montana State Correspondence School serving children in isolated areas.  After graduation she worked for one year at the Lutheran Sunday School Project, also serving isolated students.  She then returned to teaching in Lewistown, MT, Tuscan, AZ, and Anchorage, AK where she met her husband, Lloyd King.  They were married on June 2, 1956.

For the next eighteen years, the family lived in Lomita CA while Lloyd worked for the Los Angeles Harbor Department.  While living there, they were blessed with 5 children.  In 1974, after Lloyd’s retirement, the family moved to a small farm north of Alexandria, MN.  The transition from Los Angeles to Minnesota to build a farm had many challenges and rewards, with Doris instrumental in the transition.  While on the farm, Doris enjoyed  quilting and making maple syrup with Lloyd.  In 1993, Lloyd and Doris moved into Alexandria and enjoyed their time there.  Lloyd passed away in 1996 and Doris continued to live there until 2008, when she moved to Arabella Manor.  She was an active, engaged resident who loved her independence and the community of seniors at Arabella.

Doris died on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, MN at the age of 99.  She is survived by her children, Karen, (Bruce) Legg, Kristen (Bruce) Larson, Kevin King, Steven (Sheri) King, and Arne King; eight grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.  Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; parents, Magnus and Ida; brother, Milo Gerdrum; and sister, Evelyn Gerdrum.

A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, November 2, 2018, at the Alexandria Covenant Church in Alexandria.  Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday.
