Duane Garland Frederick Duane was born on January 28, 1923 to Ben and Bertha Frederick on the family farm in Westport. As a young man, Duane was an athlete for the Villard Mallards, where he made the news for his outstanding talent as a pitcher. He stayed on the farm to help keep things running when his brothers were called to serve in WWII. Duane met and married Helen Arminda Jacobson in 1948. They made their home in Alexandria. Duane was a hard working young man, and after trying out a variety of jobs, he settled on cleaning and installing carpets. Duane also found another talent in attending auctions, buying, refinishing, and selling antique furniture. Many homes around Douglas County are graced with some of Duane?s finest antiques. Duane enjoyed his annual antique sales, held in his driveway each May, July, and September. Another of Duane?s passions laid undiscovered until 1981 when he became known as Grandpa Fred. He loved surrounding himself with his five grandchildren. Duane became each grandchild?s number one fan, keeping close tabs on each of their activities, talents, and hobbies. In later years, Duane demonstrated his love for his family, lived with quiet dignity, and died with grace. Duane is survived by Helen, his wife of 60 years. He is also remembered, cherished, and forever missed by daughters Julie Frederick Angermeyr (Jim), Jan Frederick Howard (Keith), and son Gregory (Susanne). His grandchildren will forever know his strength and love: Molly Angermeyr Thorson (Nick), Megan Angermeyr (Fianc Nate), Ashely Howard, and Tyler and Jazmin Frederick. Duane is also survived by four brothers. Duane, Dad, Grandpa Fred- may we continue to learn from you as we hold your memory near to our hearts. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Alexandria with the Reverend Jeff Hansen officiating. Kay Hoffland played the organ and Dan Olson was the soloist. The family will donate any remembrances in honor and celebration of Duane?s life.
