Ed Flanigan

Edward Emmet Flanigan was born November 29, 1917 to John and Theresa Flanigan in Seattle, Washington. He was drafted into the Army which he said was the happiest day of his life as he was working as a stenographer for a bank in Seattle at the time. He was assigned to the Presidio and Camp Beal in California where he met Lois TerBush, who worked as a hostess at the servicemen's USO club. They were married while on a three day pass on July 13, 1945. Ed achieved the rank of Sergeant, and Lois often referred to him as ?Sarge.? After the service Ed and Lois returned to her hometown of Alexandria, MN where Lois' father owned the Alexandria Hotel. Ed quickly became the right hand man before purchasing the business in 1956. Ed and Lois adopted their son, Kevin, in 1951. In addition to managing the hotel, Ed sold Grolier Encyclopedias throughout western Minnesota. As the hotel business grew he added the Greyhound passenger and freight business to the hotel. Ed served the Alexandria community by serving 12 years on the city council and was a member of Our Lady of Victory parish since moving to Alexandria. Ed belonged to various service organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Elks and American Legion. Ed enjoyed the lake, community living at "the pad" on Lake Le Homme Dieu where he enjoyed fishing from the dock with his granddaughter Kelly. Ed died on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Knute Nelson Home. He is survived by his son, Kevin & wife, Carol; granddaughter, Kelly; brother, John Flanigan & wife, Rosella and nieces and nephews Memorial service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2011, 1:30 p.m. at Knute Nelson Chapel with Rev. Steve Binsfeld officiating. Burial was a Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home. www.andersonfuneral.net
