Edwin L. Nyland passed away on May 14, 2013, after an eight year battle with cancer. Ed was born on July 25, 1938, in Wolf Lake, Minnesota the son of Thomas and Lillian (Harvala) Nyland. He attended Wolf Lake Country School and Detroit Lakes High School. In 1960, Ed volunteered for the Minnesota Army National Guard. He completed basic training at Fort Ord, in California. He served for seven years. On February 24, 1962, Ed was united in marriage to Kathryn Skinnemoen at Rock Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Fergus Falls, MN. They were blessed with 51 years of marriage and two children. The couple made their home in Detroit Lakes, MN for 12 years. In 1974, they moved to Alexandria, MN and purchased Alex Glass & Paint. Ed enjoyed retail and was active in the Downtowners Association. In 1989 he started Alex Glass & Glazing. Ed was a member of First Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and taught Sunday School. Ed belonged to Alexandria Evening Lions Club having served as president from 1982-1983. He was a member of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and served as Chamber President in 1986. Upon retirement and selling the businesses in 1994 and 1999, Ed and Kathy enjoyed winters at their home in Arizona. In retirement, Ed enjoyed working and designing with stained glass, making lamps, windows and twirlers. He loved the outdoors enjoying hunting, fishing, golf and 4-wheeling with family and grandkids. Ed is survived by his wife, Kathy; children: Lisa (Jim) Haney of Albert Lea, MN, Mark (Michaela) Nyland of Argusville, ND; grandchildren: Ben & Morgan Haney; Paige & Noah Nyland; sisters: Thelma Mitchell, Mickey (LeRoy) Berg, Elvie (Vern) Zitzow all of Detroit Lakes, MN; Lois (Bruce) Mitchell of Kalispell, MT; brothers: Wally (Pat) Nyland of Ada, MN, Earl (Betty) Nyland of Lexington, KY, Jerry Nyland of Detroit Lakes, MN, Allen (Cathy) Nyland of Park Rapids, MN; brother-in-law: Wayne Skinnemoen of Wendell, MN and many nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents: Thomas & Lillian Nyland; sister, Viola Wald and brother, Norman Nyland. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Pallbearers were Dick Telander, Karl Bloomquist, Neil Ostlund, Bob Steffenson, Irv Bakken, Will Johnson. Burial will be at Kinkead Cemetery.
