Elizabeth Carter

Elizabeth Louise (Zavadil) Carter was born on May 17, 1914 in Lake Reno Township, Pope County, Minnesota to Anton and Louisa (Kalina) Zavadil. She attended country school through the eighth grade. On April 29, 1940 Elizabeth married Leonard Carter at the St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lake Reno Township. To this union the couple was blessed with three children. Elizabeth was a homemaker, and when Leonard died on April 26, 1969, Elizabeth went to work at the Holiday Inn as a housekeeper until she was 75. Elizabeth enjoyed embroidery, quilting, gardening, baking and cooking. She was a fabulous baker, making kolaches, pies, cookies and bread. Elizabeth also loved to dance and play games. Elizabeth died on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria at the age of 94. She is survived by her son, Dick (Gerry) Carter of Forada; daughter, Jeanne (Eddie) Hines of St. Paul; and brother, Frank Zavadil of Alexandria; grandchildren, Gina (Eric Baker) Gould, Tracy Gould, Mike (Debbie) Carter, Barb (Todd) Hiehle, Jennifer Carter, Steve (finance Amy) Carter, Lavonne (Randy) Bruun, Judy (Doug) Larson, Susie (Randy) Abers, Rick Norstebon, and Bob (Margaret) Norstebon; and many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Louisa; husband, Leonard; son, Dennis; brothers, Joe Pete, Hank, Ben and Ray; sisters, Annie, Mary, and Leada; and nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 18, 2009 at the St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lake Reno Township with Reverend Roger Thoennes officiating. Music was provided by organist, Ann Zavadil. Interment was in the St. Mary?s Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria. Casket bearers were Mike Carter, Barbara Hiehle, Gina Gould, Tracy Gould, Ben Zavadil, Dewey Marusak. Honorary casket bearers were Steve Carter, Jennifer Carter, Lavonne and Randy Bruun, Judy and Doug Larson, Rich Norstebon, Randy and Sue Abers, and Bob and Margaret Norstebon. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
