Ellen Marion Prchal was born July 11, 1930 in Hudson Township, MN, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Vacek) Prchal. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Ellen attended School District 94 though the eighth grade. As a young adult Ellen worked as a nanny and housekeeper for various people.
On September 26, 1949 Ellen was united in marriage to Rudy Zwieg at Zion Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with three children, Joe, Mary Ellen and Audry. Ellen and Rudy lived on Lake Cowdry for a few years before purchasing a farm near Holmes City, MN. They ran that farm for eleven years before moving to a Hobby Farm. They lived on the hobby farm for the next seventeen years. Ellen and Rudy raised chickens, Ducks, vegetables and beautiful flowers.
Ellen’s favorite interests were flower and vegetable gardening; she had an incredible green thumb! She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her grandchildren. Ellen and her sisters made many lap quilts for the VA. Ellen was an authentic Bohemian baker and enjoyed baking with her sisters, daughters and granddaughters. In recent years Ellen participated in the library club, quilting club and the funeral committee at Zion Lutheran Church
On Friday, November 24, 2017 Ellen died at the Golden Ridge Senior Assisted Living at the age of eighty-seven years. She is survived by her son, Joe Zwieg and wife, Karen, of Lowry, MN; daughters, Mary Ellen Olson of Alexandria and Audry Botzet and husband, Joe, of St. Louis Park, MN; grandchildren, Scott Olson of Alexandria, Bob Olson and wife, Jackie, of Alexandria, Joe Zwieg, Jr. and wife, Samantha, of Kensington, MN, , Heidi Roers and husband, Bryan, of Valley Springs, SD and Amanda Zwieg of Dawson, MN, Stephanie Botzet of Minneapolis, MN, Hannah Botzet of Minneapolis and Kristin Botzet of Fort Collins, CO; great grandchildren, Spencer and Gavin Olson of Alexandria, Abby and Ashley Zwieg of Kensington, Hailey Rachel and Cody Roers of Valley Springs, SD; sister, Janet Decko and husband, Richard, of Alexandria; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy Zwieg; sisters, Margaret Prchal and Edna Zwieg; and son-in-law, Alan Olson.
A funeral service will be held 11:30 AM Monday, November 27, 2017 at the Zion Lutheran Church. Reverend Geoff Gronewold will officiate. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 PM Sunday at the Anderson Funeral home in Alexandria and also one hour prior to the service at church.
