Elroy Charles was born on July 11, 1929, in Bemidji, Minnesota the son of Charles and Margaret Beliveau. He attended Bemidji High School and was a member of the basketball team that participated in the State Tournament all four years he participated on the team. He graduated from Bemidji High School in 1947 and furthered his education at Bemidji Business School.
Elroy served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army. In 1951, Elroy was married to his high school sweetheart Betty Henry. After returning from the war Elroy and Betty moved back to Bemidji where they lived for several years before moving to Alexandria. They raised their three sons: Robert, James, and Richard in Alexandria.
Elroy was Vice President at Community State Bank in Alexandria and loved to talk business with customers and family. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and was on the Finance Board for several years. He served on the Alexandria Fire Department from 1962-1982. He was also a member of the Elks, Eagles, VFW, Rotary, Past President of the Chamber of Commerce and the Alexandria Golf Club.
Elroy died on Friday, May 8, 2015. He is survived by his sons: Robert (Sandy), James (Shirley), Richard and grandchildren: Andrew, Brittany, Ashton, and Alexis; sisters: Lorrain Johnson, Eileine DeVries, Mildred Ashton, Yvonne Barry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents: Charles & Margaret; sister, Sharon Waldon.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2015, 1:00 PM at Living Word Church in Alexandria. Burial will be at Kinkead Cemetery.
