Emil Schultz

Emil H. Schultz Emil Herman Schultz was born on July 25, 1912, in Wheaton, Minnesota, the son of Emil Carl and Marie (Otto) Schultz. He was baptized at St. John?s Lutheran in Dumont, Minnesota and at age six the family moved to a farm near Truman, Minnesota. It was here that Emil started country school. On May 5, 1935, Emil was united in marriage to Elsie Voelker. Seven children were born to this union- Emil Larry, Lavonne, Lyle, Lois, Leon, Loren, and Lowell. The couple farmed Emil?s parents farm near Truman until 1937 when they moved to a farm near Ormsby. In 1939 Emil began hauling livestock for the Truman Farmers Shipping Association. As a result of the trucking business the family lived for brief periods in Mankato and Fairmont before spending the balance of the war years in Luverne. Elsie passed away on March 31, 1952, leaving seven children ages one month to 15 years. In the years that followed Emil experienced the effects of being a single parent. He worked hard at his number one priority which was the welfare of his growing children. In 1954 the family moved to Anoka and in 1957 to a farm near Willmar. Emil met Helen (Sangar) Zavadil and they were married on April 22, 1968 in Willmar. During his years in Willmar Emil was very active within his church, Redeemer Lutheran of Willmar. He served as chairman of the building committee when the congregation built a new large church. He also served as an Elder and the Chairman of the congregation. From 1970 to 1977 Emil, with much help from his wife, Helen, served as Membership Secretary for the Minnesota North District of the Lutheran Laymen?s League. Emil and Helen did a great deal of traveling during the ?70s visiting their children and relatives all over the United States. In 1980 they sold their farm and purchased a large motor home which served as their home. From 1988 to 1998 the couple lived in Alice, Texas. Helen died in 2001. Emil died on August 4, 2011, at the Douglas County Hospital at the age of 99 years. He is survived by his children Emil Larry (Myrna) Schultz of Griffin, GA, Lavonne Arvidson of Alexandria, Lyle (Margaret) Schultz of Owatonna, Lois Yungk of Litchfield, Leon (Carole) Schultz of Spicer, Loren (Judy) Schultz of Willmar, Lowell (Lynda) Schultz of Montevideo and Darwin (Yvonne) Zavadil of San Diego. Also surviving is a daughter ?in-law Arlene Zavadil of Carlos, brothers Lawrence Schultz of Fairmont and Raymond Schultz of Mankato, sisters Tootie Williamson of Truman, Luella Wessel of Trimont, and Glenda Bode of Colorado Springs, 27 grandchildren, ___great-grandchildren, and ____?great-great-grandchldren. Emil was preceded in death by his parents, wives, brother Harvey Zavadil, son-in-law David Arvidson, and six brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Minnesota on Monday, August 8, 2011, with Rev. David Domanski officiating. Sue Nelson provided music. Interment was in the St. Paul?s Lutheran Cemetery in Truman, Minnesota with Barry Arvidson, Craig Schultz, perry Yungk, Chad Schultz, Greg Schultz, Scott Zavadil, Jeremy Schultz, and Emil Larry Schultz, Jr. serving as pallbearers.
