Enfred ?Shorty? Edward Norling was born on December 25, 1921 in Lake Mary Township, Douglas County, MN to Edward and Irene (Madosh) Norling. He attended District 24 and then Central High School through the 10th grade. Shorty went to help on the farm due to his Dad?s health problems. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry in 1944 and was discharged in 1946. Shorty returned home where he continued farming and also worked at Stenzel?s Tire Recapping. Shorty was united in marriage to Priscilla Kolle in a double wedding with his brother Worrell and his wife, Norma at the First Congregational Church in Alexandria. Shorty opened his own tire business for a couple years. Then Shorty and Priscilla bought a restaurant, The Dairy Diner, which they owned and operated for 4 years. Shorty then returned to the tire business becoming the Tire Manager at the Farmer?s Union now known as Cenex, where he worked until he retired in 1983. Shorty and Priscilla also had a mowing business of mowing cemeteries and a few businesses; they also delivered the green sheet. Shorty also found time to work at Nordic Trails Golf Course, which he really enjoyed. The couple moved off the family farm in 2008 and moved to Alexandria. In 1992, Shorty went back to school and received his high school diploma. The couple moved into Nelson Gables three years ago. Shorty enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball, and golf. He and Priscilla loved to travel and to spend their winters in Truth and Consequences, NM. Shorty loved people and life, and was an inspiration to many. Shorty died on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 89. He is survived by his loving wife, Priscilla of Alexandria; son, Keith (Sheila) Norling of Alexandria; daughter, Kolleen (Gerald) Roth of Alexandria; grandchildren, Tammy (Matthew Justin) Roth, Reggie (Kari) Roth, Anita (Cody Lindstrom) Norling, and Paul (Jessica Klimek) Norling; great-grandchildren, Gracie Norling, Laine Lindstrom, Riley Roth; brother, Roland ?Jim? (JoAnne) Norling of Alexandria; sister, R?Dene (Robert) Everett of New Brighton; and several nieces and nephews. Shorty is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Irene; brother and sister-in-law Worrell and Norma Norling. A funeral service was held on Monday, October 10, 2011 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Reverend Mark Astrup and Reverend James Oakland officiating. Music was provided by Becky Worley, organist and Kari Roth, soloist. Interment was in Lake Mary Cemetery in Lake Mary Township, Douglas County. Military Honors were provided by the Alexandria American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, and the Minnesota National Honor Guard. Casket bearers were Tammy Roth, Matthew Justin, Reggie Roth, Kari Roth, Anita Norling, Cody Lindstrom, Paul Norling, and Jessica Klimek. Honorary casket bearers were Willard Iverson, Oliver Anderson, Omar Gustafson, Al West, and Scott Manthei. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
