Fern Larson

Fern Thelma Nelson was born May 22, 1918 in Barrett, MN, the daughter of Frank and Tena (Waugh) Nelson. Fern was baptized and confirmed at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Barrett. She graduated from Barrett High School in 1936. On June 22, 1939 Fern was united in marriage to Leonard Larson at her parents home in Barrett. Leonard was manager of Farm Grain Elevators in a number of locations and Fern was his bookkeeper in most of these locations. She also worked as the bookkeeper at a pharmacy in Fargo, ND for a number of years. Fern was an avid baseball fan. The Minnesota Twins provided great entertainment for her over many years. Fern and a friend went to Orlando, FL to watch the Twins play in spring training. Her videos of the 1987 and 1991 Championship game highlights were among her prized possessions. She was interested in the Alexandria Beetles and attended many of their games. Fern was also an excellent cook. She had a cookbook of her favorite recipes published in 1981 and sold over one thousand copies. When her husband died suddenly in 1978 Fern moved from Hankinson, ND to Alexandria, MN. Alexandria has been her home ever since then. She has been a member of Calvary Lutheran Church since 1980 and is an honorary member of the Elizabeth circle. She was very active in the circle in her younger years. On Thursday, October 9, 2008 Fern died at the age of ninety years at the Lakeview Good Samaritan Home in Glenwood, MN. She is survived by her sister, Verna Comer of Alexandria; her nephew, Stephen Comer and his family of San Diego, CA; a sister-in-law, Borgie Larson of Minneota, MN; and many other relatives and friends. Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Larson; and her parents Frank and Tena Nelson. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, MN. Rev. Mark Astrup officiated. Peggy Wiese and Sandra Buckner provided music. Interment followed in the Union Cemetery at Barrett. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
