Florence Hill

Florence Marie (Melvig) Hill was born on February 8, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to William and Lena (Thomas) Melvig. She attended Maria Sanford Elementary in Minneapolis through the 6th grade and Nokomis Jr. High School. Florence graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis in 1937. She worked at the Courtyard cafeteria as a waitress and cashier. Florence was united in marriage to Walter T. (Ted) Hill on January 3, 1942 in Minneapolis, MN. They couple was blessed with two children, Ronald and Judith. The couple lived in Minneapolis until Ted was inducted back into the Navy in January of 1944. Florence moved in with her parents until the end of the war when Ted returned in the fall on 1945. While Ted was gone she worked at Bemis Bag Company making clothespin bags. Ted purchased an Automotive engine rebuilding business in Alexandria where they moved on April 1, 1946. Florence was employed at Yeutters Bakery where she worked for many years. The family lived on Lake Darling until 1968 when they built a new home on Lakeside Drive on Lake Winona. They lived there until 2001 when they moved to Windmill Ponds and later to Bridgewater Estates. Florence and Ted most recently moved to Bethany Home June of 2010. Florence was very crafty and she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, making quilts, cooking. She was especially known for her cream puffs and pea soup. She also loved playing cards and throwing parties, especially for the grandchildren?s birthdays. She had an open heart for anybody in need, she was always pleasant and enjoyed being with people. She also had a special love for dogs. Florence died on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Bethany Home in Alexandria at the age of 92. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Ted of Alexandria; son, Ronald (Linda) Hill of Alexandria; daughter, Judith (Melvin) of Bartlesville, OK; grandchildren, Stevie (John) Williams, Jude (Mindi) Henry; Julie (Roger) Bienusa; Stacy Hill, Matthew Hill, and Robert Edman; great-grandchildren, Jack, Henry, Liza and Max Williams; Lake, Sophia, and Zebediah Henry; and Sara and Christopher Bienusa. Florence is preceded in death by her parents, William and Lena; and brothers, George and Vernon. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Bethany Home Chapel in Alexandria with Reverend Andrea Olson and Kathryn Jeffrey officiating. Music was provided by pianist, Virginia Hegre, soloist Mindi Henry, and guitarist, Henry Williams. Reader was Jack Williams. Inurnment will be held later in Kinkead Cemetery. Honorary urn bearers were Florence?s Great-Grandchildren. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
