Fred Lindstrom

Fredrick Charles Lindstrom was born the youngest of four children on February 20, 1925 in Carlos Township, Douglas County, Minnesota to Fred “Dick” and Eleanor (Hainzel) Lindstrom. He walked the railroad tracks for 8 years to go to school at District 77 in the 1930’s. Fred graduated high school in Alexandria in 1944 and then went to Dunwoody in the mechanics program for 8 months. He served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and 1946 in Germany. Fred worked in West Fargo in the winters of 1946 and 1947 in a packing plant and then go back home to help farm in the summer. In 1947 and 1948 he worked at the Minneapolis Moline factory in the foundry department in Minneapolis. He then worked in a garage on Lake Street in Minneapolis in the winters of 1948 and 1949. Fred then decided to stay and farm full time.

On November 17, 1954 Fred was united in marriage to Sylvia Moll at a friend’s home in Parkers Prairie. To this union the couple was blessed with five sons. Fred and Sylvia continued farming until 1984 when they retired, sold the farm and moved into Alexandria. During his retirement, Fred started working on his family’s genealogy which became his passion. He spent countless hours visiting cemeteries, meeting with people who were related and traveling many miles all across Minnesota, into Wisconsin and the Dakotas.

Fred was a hardworking, honest man who enjoyed working on the farm milking the cows, driving horses, and fixing things. He also enjoyed deer hunting and taking rides in the car.

Fred died on Friday, November 21, 2014 at Peaceful Bliss at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Alexandria; sons, Dean (Lori) Lindstrom of Alexandria, Steven Lindstrom of Alexandria and Harvey Lindstrom of Carlos; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Larson of Alexandria; brother, Harold Lindstrom of Dubuque, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Eleanor; sons, Mark and Robert; and sister, Gladys Hedine.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Alexandria with Reverend Roger Parrish-Siggelkow officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery. Military Honors were provided by the Alexandria Veterans Memorial Unit and the Minnesota National Honor Guard.
