George Martin Walter, 93, of Alexandria passed away at his home in Windmill Ponds on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Private family services will be held at a later date.

George Martin Walter was born on July 14, 1931 to Mildred Florence (Peterson) and Kenneth Adam Walter in Osakis, Minnesota. He was one of fourteen children who grew up on the farm in West Port and attended schooling until the 9th grade, when his father became ill and George took over the family farm.

After farming several years with his family, George enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean wartime era. He was first stationed in Washington and then later in Idaho. On February 5, 1955 George married MaryAnn Kathryn Johnson in Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho. Together, the couple welcomed eight children. After George’s honorable discharge from the Air Force, the family moved to Osakis, Minnesota where George first became employed at Osakis Silo. He worked there for several years before moving over to Land O Lakes, where he worked for 28 years. George then became employed at Pope Douglas Solid Waste Management, where he worked for eighteen years fulltime, and then continued on an additional eight parttime. George was known by his colleagues, family, and friends as a hard worker his whole life. He tried three different times to retire, finally succeeding at the age of 80.

George deeply cared for his family. He especially loved watching his boys and grandchildren participate in sports. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Church. He spent every morning reading the Bible. George read it cover to cover over fifty times throughout his lifetime.
