Gertrude K. Nelson age 93 of Alexandria died on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at St. Benedict Senior Community in St. Cloud. A Funeral Service will be held 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.

Gertrude Katherine Esther (Kressin) Nelson was born on August 9, 1922, in Barney, North Dakota to Arthur and Mathilda (Radig) Kressin. She graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1940 and attended Valley City College and received a teaching certificate. Gertrude taught elementary school for five years in a one room country school house grades 1-8. She taught in communities of Walcott, Erie and Campbell, ND.
On June 29, 1948, she married Maurice Nelson in Wahpeton, ND. They owned and operated retail stores in Mahnomen, Twin Valley and retired from the Sears Catalog store in Ada, MN in 1984. They enjoyed the next thirteen years wintering in Arizona and moved to Alexandria in 1993. During the summer, they enjoyed being at the cabin on South Twin Lake where they loved entertaining family and friends.
Gertrude was always active in church and she was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Auxiliary of Gideon’s, and Ladies Auxiliary in Twin Valley. Most important to Gertrude was her faith, family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, entertaining, socializing, bowling and playing cards, especially pinochle and whist.
Gertrude died on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at St. Benedict Senior Community in St. Cloud at the age of 93. She is survived by son, Craig (Ann) Nelson; daughters, Patti Stennes and Carol (Eric) Jensen; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Alberta Tollefson, Doris (Edwin) Olson and Sylvia Kelly and many nieces and nephews. Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband Maurice; parents, Arthur and Mathilda; siblings, Louise, Lucille, Corwin, Kenneth, Charlotte, Franklin, Emily and Marjorie.
