Glen William “Bill” Skalisky was born June 3, 1946, in Sioux City, IA, the son of Leonard and Dorothy (Nelson) Skalisky. Bill was raised in Sioux City where he attended school. Bill played football at Morningside High School. Following his graduation from Morningside he continued his education at Norfolk Junior College. He also played football for the college. Bill furthered his education with four more years of college at South Dakota State University in Yankton, SD.
Bill worked in Sioux Falls, SD, for many years. He was a sales representative for Dakota Welding. On October 18, 1985 Bill was united in marriage to Donna (Sunde) Baschke in Las Vegas, NV. He was immediately blessed with three step-children, Roger, Cindy and Judy. Bill and Donna made their home in Arnolds Park, IA. He took a job as a custodial engineer in the Arnolds Park school district. Bill loved visiting and had a knack for getting to know people. He became the official hallway counselor in the schools and was always ready to lend an ear to children and young adults in need. After thirteen years with the school district Bill became disabled and retired.
In 1999, Bill and Donna moved to Osakis, MN, to be closer to Donna’s family. In 2001 they moved to their round house in Alexandria, MN.
Bill loved gardening and was a member of the Alexandria Garden Club; he served as president of the club. Bill was a good singer and gave his time to sing in the church choir in Osakis. He liked being out of doors and spending time camping with his family. Bill loved morel mushroom picking and was an avid bird watcher. He also hunted deer and just loved to go fishing. At -20 degrees, Bill could be found lying on a frozen lake, staring through a hole in the ice and trying to hook another fish. He was proud that he was able to teach his grandchildren how to fish. Bill was an avid sports fan and attended games or watched them on television whenever he could.
Bill was a people person. Whenever Bill greeted you it was with a smile and a toothpick. He kept himself well informed and took time to observe people and events. Being able to visit with just about anyone was something Bill did well. He was never afraid to share his views and wanted to know what others thought too. Bill also loved sharing his quick wit and sense of humor.
Very important to Bill was his family. He loved spending time with his step-children and he loved being called grandpa. Bill thought the world of Donna and was devoted to her. They will all miss him dearly.
On Sunday, September 30, 2018, Bill died at the age of seventy-two years. He is preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Nancy Nicholes. Bill is survived by his wife, Donna Skalisky, of Alexandria; step-children, Roger Baschke and wife, Ann, of Spencer, IA, Cindy Nordstrom and husband, Mark, of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Judy Kilgore and husband, Ben, of Eagan, MN; grandchildren, Brooke Sievers and husband, Chris, Bradi Sievers and husband, Mitch, Justin Nordstrom and wife, Ali, Cori Nordstrom, Kyle Nordstrom, Abigail Kilgore and Annalise Kilgore; brother, James Skalisky and wife, Marsha, of Sergeant Bluff, IA; sisters, LeeAnn Frink and husband, Nate, of Nehawka, NE, and Julie Jacobs and husband, Kevin, of Morgan’s Point Resort, TX; and one brother-in-law, Don Nicholes of Mesa, AZ.
A service of remembrance and resurrection will be held 11 AM, Friday, October 12, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church.
