Gordon Lyle Peterson was born on August 11, 1947, in Alexandria, MN, the son of Lloyd and Arline (Olson) Peterson. He was baptized on November 2, 1947 and confirmed on October 21, 1962 at Grace Lutheran Church in Brandon, MN. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria in 1965 and then furthered his education at the Alexandria Vocational College.
Gordie met the love of his life, Susan Syverson in 1966. Gordie enlisted in the Navy in 1968. While on leave, Gordie married Susan on September 20, 1969 at West Moe Lutheran Church. They lived in California off and on for about 2 years. After finishing his enlistment in the Navy, Gordie and Susan moved back to Moe Township where they raised three children Aaron, Kelly, and Kimberly.
Gordie worked various jobs throughout his life including being a journeyman electrician, warehouse manager, and Maintenance Engineer Supervisor for Knute Nelson for 18 years. Gordie could fix just about anything and enjoyed the challenge of restoring old tractors and machinery.
Loving, dependable, family man, jokester, and dedicated husband, father and grandfather are words that Gordie's family use to describe him. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. Gordie spent many weekends camping with his family and teaching them to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors with respect for nature and for others. Some other hobbies Gordie enjoyed include snowmobiling, NASCAR, and four-wheeling. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.
Gordon L. Peterson died on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN at the age of 69. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Susan Peterson of Garfield, MN; son, Aaron (Benita) Peterson of Alexandria; daughters, Kelly (Ryan) Helmbrecht of Alexandria and Kimberly (Brian) Fuchs of Garfield; grandchildren Joshua and Samantha Helmbrecht of Alexandria and Carter and Kendra Fuchs of Garfield; sisters Judy (Dewey) Grove of Brandon, Wendy Peterson of Brandon, and Kathy (Brian) Drexler of Alexandria; many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at West Moe Lutheran Church in Moe Township, MN with the Reverend Sara Evenson officiating. Diane Alvershere was the organist and Greg Kapphahn was the soloist. Interment was in the church cemetery. Casket Bearers were Peter Syverson, Andrew Syverson, Donald Syverson, Kevin Grove, Bryan Hanson, and Christopher Hanson. Honorary Casket Bearers were Gordie's grandchildren.
