Gwendolyn Schultz

January 20, 1936 — January 20, 1936

Gwendolyn Marie Soberg was born in Alexandria, MN on January 20, 1936, the daughter of Bennett and Sarah (Myhr) Soberg. She was raised near Holmes City and in Alexandria where she graduated from high school. On December 21, 1958 Gwen was united in marriage to Robert Schultz at Trysil Lutheran Church near Farwell, MN. The couple lived for a short time in Alexandria and Anoka, MN. Gwen and Bob were blessed with two children, Greg and Deborah. Gwen worked for United Telephone in Alexandria and later for Gardonville Telephone. Most of their married life was spent living in Brandon, MN. Following her retirement in 1997 Gwen and Bob traveled to warmer climates during the winters. They drove their motor home south for two winters and spent time seeing the south and western United States. Following Bob?s death in 2001 Gwen moved to Alexandria to be closer to her daughter. Gwen?s family was very important to her. She was very proud of her children. She was always ready to offer her care and company whenever her children or grandchildren were in need. She enjoyed going to see her grandchildren participate in school and church programs and also watching them play at sports. Gwen enjoyed sewing and quilting; she made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. Gwen also enjoyed doing beadwork and making jewelry. She was also proud of her Scandinavian heritage; she was a skilled lefse maker and made other ethnic treats. Life was not always easy for Gwen. At age thirteen she contracted polio and spent several weeks at the Sister Kinney Institute in Minneapolis. Throughout her life she was always dealing with the painful side effects left by polio. As she dealt with these debilitating effects she always kept her spirit up. She never complained and never wanted to burden others with her pain. Gwen was a very strong woman. On Saturday, February 26, 2011 Gwen died at the age of seventy-five years. Her husband, Bob Schultz, preceded her in death. Gwen is survived by her two children, Greg Schultz of Morris, MN and Deborah Thorpe and husband, Gary, of Alexandria; four grandchildren, Sean Schultz, Kyle Schultz, Derrick Thorpe and Holli Thorpe; and two sisters, Marlene Nelson and husband, Vernal, of Kensington, MN and Ardys Fischer of Alexandria A funeral service will be held 11 AM Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church in Brandon. Rev. Dennis Preston will officiate. Interment in the Brandon Cemetery will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 PM Tuesday at Anderson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at church. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
