Harlan Edmund Froemming

July 23, 1928 — August 7, 2023

Alexandria

Early in the morning of August 7th, 2023, Harlan Edmund Froemming, age 95, went to his heavenly home from Alexandria Assisted Living.

Harlan was born to Edmund and Ulrika “Rika” (Brueske) Froemming on July 23, 1928, in Alex Township.  He was baptized at St. John’s in Garfield and was confirmed at Zion church in Alexandria. He was the youngest and last survivor of four children: Lucille (Glenn) Lafferty, Adelheid (Harold) Lindquist, Arlette (Jack) Hagen.

Harlan attended area schools.  At the age of 23, on June 8, 1952, he married the love of his life, Leila Stark.  Their marriage was blessed with four children: Jackie (Randy) Elmer, Shelley (Tom) Jackson, Kerry (Kristi) Froemming, and Rick Froemming. Harlan was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  All of them brought joy and happiness to his life.

In 1953, Harlan and Leila moved to Chisholm, MN, where he worked in the iron ore mines. He always had farming in his blood and was able to move back to the Garfield area to start his passion of dairy and crop farming.

Harlan retired from farming in 1992 and handed the reigns over to his two sons.  Now, his two grandsons continue the family farm legacy.  Many cups of coffee have been enjoyed over the years talking about farming, politics, and family.  He also enjoyed telling stories and sharing memories with others. In the latter years, the family gathered at their home to have coffee every Saturday morning.

In his retirement years, he liked to stay busy with his lawn, gardening, feeding the birds, and still helping on the farm.  He joined the Gideons International Organization and was very active and passionate about their mission in spreading the Gospel of the Lord. He also served many positions within St. John’s Lutheran Church, on boards of Garfield Grain Elevator, Ida Township, and NFO.

Pallbearers are his grandchildren: Sara Risner, Trent Froemming, David Jackson, Darrin Froemming, Tanya Pierson, Becca Urban, and Justin Froemming.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Leila, children Jackie, Shelley, Kerry and Rick. Brothers- in-law Jack Hagen and sisters in-law Iris Stark and Rita Stark.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, brothers- in-law and sisters-in-law Harold Lindquist, Glenn Lafferty, Clarence (Marion) Stark, Myrt (Bill) Schultz, Ray (Eleanor) Stark, Donald (Joanne) Stark, Norman Stark and Darrel Stark.
