Harold William Hoppe was born on July 5, 1921 to Fred and Minnie (Stoeck) Hoppe in Carlos Township on a farm near Alexandria where he also grew up. He attended school through the 8th grade. He joined the army on December 30, 1944, and served two years overseas near Seoul, Korea, becoming a motor staff sergeant. He returned from the army and purchased his parent?s farm in 1946. He farmed for many years. On June 7, 1953, he was united in marriage to Gladys Floding and they had three children. The couple continued to crop farm and milk cows after their marriage until 1982 when they sold the dairy cattle. For years, he and his brother Frank ran Hoppe Brothers Mill and in recent years, Harold purchased a band saw with which he enjoyed sawing lumber. Harold enjoyed many things such as cutting, chopping and stacking firewood, hunting, fishing, trapping, reading his many magazines, singing, teaching and mentoring trappers, and traveling to the casinos. Harold also loved tending his vegetable gardens and was happy to share his produce. He enjoyed visiting with his many friends and was a member of the Garfield Senior Club, the VFW of Miltona and the American Legion of Alexandria. He was always willing to help his relatives, friends and neighbors. Harold dearly loved his daughters, their families and all extended family. Harold died in Marietta, Georgia on March 21, 2013 at the age of 91 years 8 months and 16 days. He is survived by his children: Diane (Corrie) Mattocks of Carlos, MN, Doris Grimm of Marietta, GA, Darlene Mitchell of Miltona, MN; grandchildren: Cameron Cegelske, Brandon (Angie) Cegelske, Tara (Corey) Jensen, Stephanie Grimm, Jennifer (Lewis) Brown, Katherine Grimm, Shanna Mitchell, Krista Mitchell, Kayla (Ryan) Svor, Jenna Mattocks; and great-grandchildren: Isaiah Jensen, Jonathan Jensen, Owen Cegelske, Mason Cegelske, and Cailin Jensen. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Hoppe, parents, four brothers, Leopold, Frank, Fred, Edwin Hoppe; two sisters, Agnes Bruder, Helen Dobberpuhl; and son-in-law, Dennis Grimm. He will be greatly missed by all of those who knew him. A funeral service will be held 11:30 AM Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Reverend David Hinz and Reverend William Moeller officiated. Interment will follow in the Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Casket Bearers include Dennis Rapp, Jerry Rapp, Elroy Wussow, Donovan Wussow, Al Olsen and David Maresh. Honorary casket bearers include all of Harold?s grandchildren and great grandchildren. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 87, VFW Post 936 and the Minnesota National Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 PM Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home. Additional visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 AM Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home.
