Harriet Elsie Schulz

August 16, 1927 — January 3, 2023

Leaf Valley

Harriet Elsie (Schuelke) Schulz was born on August 16, 1927, to William August Ernest Schuelke and Ida Ottilie (Krueger) Schuelke in Leaf Valley, MN. Harriet grew up on a farm and her family remembers her telling stories about chasing cows out of the lake. She attended Country School of District 23 in Leaf Valley and later graduated from Central High School in 1946. Harriet then attended St. Cloud Beauty School, St. Cloud, MN and graduated in 1947.

Harriet became a beautician after completing her training and required hours with Ruth Lindquist in Garfield before opening her own business, Valley Beauty Salon. She worked as a beautician until she was 73 years old and was a part of Heart of Lakes Area Beautician Association for 35 years.

Harriet was a life time member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church of Leaf Valley.  She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Ebenezer Lutheran Church. She was involved in many church activities as a Sunday School teacher, Ladies Circle member, and Hotdish Committee member.  She especially enjoyed singing in the Valley Choir and The Valley Notes.  Harriet missed attending church services at Ebenezer after moving.

Harriet touched many lives during her years as a beautician.  Many times, people would come up to her and say, “You used to cut my hair when I was growing up!” or “I remember when you did my hair for my wedding or you gave me my first haircut”.  Even after her days as a beautician, Harriet continued with her gift of conversation and caring about people.

Harriet met Marvin Robert Schulz while growing up in the same area and they were married on September 25, 1951. They spent several years building their house themselves. Harriet was a great cook, hard working farm wife, and a wonderful mother. Harriet and Marvin both had birthdays in August and they hosted many birthday parties with a garage dance included. She enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, fishing on Lake Miltona, and babysitting and loving on her grandchildren.

Harriet Elsie (Schuelke) Schulz passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Glenwood Retirement Village at the age of 95. She is survived by her children, Gail (Greg Dahlgren) Schulz, Richard (Kim) Schulz, and Shelly (Roy Borris) Schulz-Borris; grandchildren, Terra (Jeffrey) Anderson, Alex Schulz, Sara (Blake) Nath, and Ryan Borris; great-grandchildren, Ross, Elsie, Cora, Beckett, and Maddox. Harriet is preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Marvin; and siblings, Bernice Larson and Harlan Schuelke.
