Helen Jane Bollum was born on December 13, 1923 in Farwell, MN to Olaf and Ella (Belgum) Bollum. She was baptized and confirmed at Farwell Lutheran Church and graduated from Kensington High School in 1941. She went to teacher?s college in St. Cloud and graduated in 1943. Helen taught school in Remer, Rush City, Brainerd, Chokio, and Starbuck. Helen taught i5th grade inStarbuck for over 40 years, where she had a lasting effect on hundreds of students and as a result the entire community. She retired in 1987. Helen was a faithful friend, beloved teacher, favorite aunt, poet, card player, volunteer and child of God, and will be dearly missed. Helen died on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood at the age of 87. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Alice Bollum of Brainerd and Jeannette Bollum of Minneapolis; many cherished nieces and nephews; and hundreds of friends and other family members. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Olaf and Ella; four brothers, Bernard, Donald, Rolf, George who all served in WWII and of whom Helen was very proud. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Nora Lutheran Church in rural Kensington with Reverend Elaine Leone officiating. Music was provided by organist, Marlys Jensen and soloist, Randy Peterson. Interment was held in Farwell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the family to be used as an annual memorial scholarship, to be established in Helen?s name at Minnewaska Area High School. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
