Herbert Berg

Herbert Orrin Berg was born April 21, 1923 in Minneapolis at his home to Oscar and Clara (Gunderson) Berg. He grew up in Edina and graduated from St. Louis Park High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Army on November 16, 1942. Herbert served in the European Theater during WWII in the Timberwolves 104th Infantry Division as an infantry rifle man until his discharge on October 9, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Herbert returned home to Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota. Herbert met his wife Adeline while they were singing in the church choir. They were married on April, 7, 1951, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Herbert started as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Minneapolis and transferred to Alexandria. He retired after delivering mail for over 30 years. In the fall of 1955, they purchased Casto?s Resort and renamed it Berg?s Resort located on Lake Le Homme Dieu. Herbert and Adeline developed the resort along with their four children. The family will continue this heritage as it has for 57 years. Herbert loved and was loved by his family and friends. He had an appreciation for nature, enjoyed fishing, playing cards, was an avid reader and was known for his dry humor. Herbert was also an ?engineer? in a sense, building, constructing, and solving an array of different problems and tasks. His patriotism combined with respect, dignity, and love will live on forever in his family. He was a member of many groups and organizations, including: American Legion Post 87 and served as a past commander, Sons of Norway, Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, and First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Herbert died on Friday May 24, 2013 in Alexandria at the age of 90. Herbert is survived by his four children: daughter, Denise (Kevin) Strand of Circle Pines; sons, Brian (Bernice) Berg of Alexandria, Gary Berg of Fridley, and Kevin (Julie) Berg of Ames, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Aaron Berg, Sarah (Shane) Olson; Laura and Kyle Strand; Thomas (Courtney), Daniel and Jennifer Berg; great-grandchildren, Briana and Gavin Olson; sister, Eleanor (Chuck) Hardin of Clinton, MO; and several nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Adeline; parents, Oscar and Clara; brothers, Donald and John; and sister, Marguerite. A funeral service was held Monday, June 3, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Pastor Marilee Bergerson officiating. Music was provided by organist, Randy Morken, and soloist, Patrick Kalina. Military honors were provided by the Alexandria American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, and the Minnesota National Honor Guard. Interment was at Trysil Cemetery in Holmes City Township. Casket bearers were Aaron Berg, Thomas Berg, Daniel Berg, Kyle Strand, Shane Olson, and Ian Olson. Honorary casket bearers were Sarah Olson, Laura Strand, Jennifer Berg, Courtney Berg, Briana Olson, and Gavin Olson. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
