Herbert Hoppe Jr.

Herbert Gregor Hoppe Jr. was born November 7, 1939, in rural Morris, MN to Herbert Hoppe Sr. and Catherine (Spain) Hoppe.  He was baptized and confirmed at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, MN.  He graduated from Chokio High School where he was a standout football player. On January 31, 1964, he wed Connie Miller at Saint Teresa’s Catholic Church in Donnelly MN.

They started their family in Bloomington, MN where Herb worked at a foundry until they moved to Cokato, MN to begin farming.  In 1978, they relocated to Brandon, MN where he farmed, managed a dairy herd, and also worked in the seed corn business for many years.  Later, he worked at Alexandria Technical College until retirement.

Herb was a farmer at heart and enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his family. Herb was happiest spending his time with Connie and his family. He loved passing lessons and advice to his grandchildren. Many hellos and goodbyes were sealed with his signature bear hug.

Herb passed away Monday, May 21, 2018, at his home in Brandon, MN at the age of 78.  He is survived by his wife, Connie of 54 years, and his five children: Steven (Iryna) Hoppe of Dent, MN, Kenneth (Cynthia) Hoppe of Dent, MN, William (Jessica) Hoppe of Horace, ND, Scott (Kim) Hoppe of Fargo, ND, and Cynthia (Kody) Carlson of Alexandria, MN; and fourteen grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.  Herb is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Catherine Hoppe, and his brothers Harold Hoppe of California and Daryl Hoppe of Oregon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, May 25, 2018, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Brandon.  Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Morris.
