Herb Johnson of Alexandria, MN died peacefully while surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, December 30, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Carmen Johnson of Alexandria, MN; children, Alicen Johnson of Fargo, ND and Jenny Centko and husband, John, of Bemidji, MN; grandchildren, Krystle Miller, and husband, Richard, of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Leanna Hanson of Mahtomedi, MN, and Robert Hanson of Fergus Falls, MN; Sister Ardelle Anderson and husband Luther Anderson of Evansville, MN; Nephew, Dennis Anderson and wife, Jeanette, of Sebeka, MN. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Alice Johnson, niece, Cherryl Kay Anderson Martell, nephew, Timothy Allen Anderson, and great niece and nephew, Christine and Christopher. Herb (Herbie) Arlen Johnson was born January 4, 1944 in Pelican Rapids, MN, the son of Herman and Alice (Anderson) Johnson. Herb grew up in Pelican Rapids where he graduated high school in 1961. He continued his education attending college in Wahpeton, ND. On July 16, 1983, Herb was united in marriage to Carmen Horvat at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Alexandria. Herb retired in 2003 after working at Alexandria Extrusion for 27 years. He later kept busy during retirement while working for Service Master of Alexandria. Herb, a self-proclaimed ?Stubborn Old Norwegian?, was known as a soft-spoken tender man who loved his wife and daughters. One of Herb?s pastimes was viewing AutaBuy and Shooter?s Bible to be up-to-date on the latest hotrod cars and shooting gear. Herb was an avid sportsman and in his later years he enjoyed living vicariously by swapping hunting stories with his nephews and grandson. Herb was also a person known for telling a good sportsman story or sharing his philosophy of life to anyone who had an ear that could be bent. In one of Herb?s stories he said you can always tell a good Norwegian by how they eat Lutefisk, which he stated there are several methods. Herb?s, favorite method was the slurp. Herb was passionate about cars and had a 57 Chevy as his first car and known for occasionally exceeding the speed limit. He also made it known to some of the power of his ?Four ? Wheel ? Drive ? Truck? that could do just about anything. We not only celebrate the passing of Herbert A. Johnson, we celebrate his birth. Herb would have been 69 years old on January 4th. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Cornerstone Church in Alexandria, MN. Reverend Darryl Knappen will be the officiant. Interment will be in the Lake Christina Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers include Allen Anderson, Dennis Anderson, Brian Anderson and Robert Hanson. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at church. Arrangements were with Anderson Funeral Home.
