Howard Hartson Jones was born September 23, 1914 in Belmont, MA, the son of Charles L. and Mabel V. (Perkins) Jones. The Jones family moved to Minneapolis, MN when Howard was young. Howard was schooled in Minneapolis where he graduated from West High School. Following his schooling Howard was a salesman for S & M Wholesale. Howard loved selling tires. He worked for S & M Wholesale for 50 years, retiring at age seventy, in 1988. On May 10, 1941 Howard was united in marriage to Alice Smithburg in Minneapolis. The couple was blessed with four children, Jacquelyn, Judith, Jennifer and Jerri. In 1963 the family moved to Alexandria to be more central to Howard?s sales territory. Howard was a member of the Traveling Men?s Association, the Masons, the Elks and the Lions. Howard enjoyed fishing in the summer and winter. He also enjoyed golfing. Howard loved music and loved to sing. He harmonized with a barbershop quartet, played the spoons and other unique or improvised instruments. When he was a child he and his brother would stand on a corner and sing for their supper. Howard?s family was very important to him He was very proud of his girls, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In his retirement he would spend his winters traveling to each of his daughter?s homes throughout the United States. On Tuesday, July 6, 2010 Howard died at the age of ninety-five years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Alice; three brothers, Richard, Fred and Charles Jones; and four sisters, Donna Glenn; Charlotte Esping, Harriet Schultz and Barbara Robideau; and one great grandson, Jeffrey Knudson. Howard is survived by his daughters, Jacquelyn Knudson and husband, Wayne, of Seely Lake, MT, Judith Josephson and husband, John, of Edina, MN, Jennifer Fisher and husband, Bill, of Gastonia, NC and Jerri and husband, Vern, of Superior, CO; grandchildren, Sandra Zarembinski, Stephen Knudson, Eric Josephson, Lisa Firey, Lindsay Brambilla, Chad Brambilla, Michelle Hughes and Matthew Warkenthien; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Katherine and Jamie Zarembinski, and Emma Knudson, Carson, Olivia and Spencer Hughes, and Madisen and Kailyn Josephson; one brother, George Jones and wife, Carole, of Minneapolis. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Knute Nelson Chapel in Alexandria. Reverend John Peshek will officiate. Virginia Hegre will provide music. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Private interment was in Kinkead on Monday, July 12. Honorary casket bearers include Wayne Knudson, John Josephson, Bill Fisher and Vern Warkenthien. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Jeffrey Knudson Foundation, PO Box 31158, Billings, MT 59107. Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home.
